Maryland Libraries Partner with MPT for Film Screenings, Discussion
The film Free For All: The Public Library tells the story of America's public libraries and the role they play in communities
(BALTIMORE) — A new documentary that focuses on how public libraries helped shape the country is being screened throughout Maryland this spring in anticipation of a virtual statewide discussion organized by Howard County Library System, Maryland Libraries Together and Maryland Public Television (MPT). The documentary, Free For All: The Public Library, will premiere April 29 on MPT. The statewide virtual event, including a facilitated book club-type discussion, is set for 7 to 8:15 p.m. on May 13.
"We’re proud to partner with Maryland Public Television on what is sure to be a powerful conversation about America’s public libraries," said Morgan Lehr Miller, Maryland State Librarian. "Libraries are an integral part of their communities. It’s thrilling to see their impact magnified in this powerful new documentary."
Free For All: The Public Library tells the story of the people who helped America’s public libraries grow into the community institutions they are today. From the pioneering women behind the “Free Library Movement” to the resilient library workers of today, the film introduces viewers to the people behind public libraries and the important role they play across the country.
Marylanders are encouraged to tune in for the April 29 premiere or view the documentary on the MPT website. As part of the virtual discussion on May 13, local librarians will facilitate small group conversations among those in attendance. Registration is required.
Numerous library systems throughout the state are partnering with MPT to screen the documentary this spring as part of the Indie Lens Pop-Up series, which brings people together for film screenings and conversations. Featuring documentaries seen on PBS’s Independent Lens, Indie Lens Pop-Up brings local residents, leaders and organizations together to discuss a variety of important topics. A list of Maryland screenings of Free For All: The Public Library can be found on the event registration page.
“Public libraries have long been a lifeline for communities, and the impact of having a welcoming space where everyone feels they belong and can learn, grow, and connect has never been more critical,” said Tonya Aikens, President & CEO, Howard County Library System. “Libraries are hubs of hope, connection, and opportunity, and a place where communities come together. Libraries endure as a testament to the power of education and the belief that everyone deserves a chance to thrive. These are values that Howard County Library System proudly stands beside.”
