Maryland Libraries Kick Off Summer Programs

Public library systems tailor their programs to serve local youth and families

BALTIMORE — The Maryland State Library Agency is pleased to announce that summer reading and learning programs are beginning this week at public libraries throughout the state. The theme this year is Color Our World. Libraries will offer a variety of programs that support the arts and creative expression, including sidewalk chalk activities, “creator spaces” in their branches and creative dance programs. Many libraries are working with local art centers and councils to support their work and host programs that celebrate the arts.

The Maryland State Library Agency coordinates statewide partnerships to support local summer library programs. These programs encourage reading and other enrichment opportunities to help young people avoid the “summer slide,” when students have been shown to experience learning loss while not in school.

“When school is out, the library is in,” said Maryland State Librarian Morgan Lehr Miller. “Research has proven that kids who participate in reading and learning programs at their libraries over the summer are set up for success when school resumes in the fall. We’re proud that Maryland’s libraries lead the way in providing free, fun and engaging learning experiences all summer long.”

In addition to offering incentive-based reading programs for all age levels, libraries also provide a wide array of programs that engage all interests. Among the programs being offered this year, youth will have the opportunity to work with local artists to create a mural, participate in monthly sidewalk art events, enjoy family painting nights and spend time navigating a color obstacle course with an accompanying foam machine. Other activities include storytimes, hands-on art activities, special performances, and STEM programs. Families can check with their local libraries to find activities near them.

Maryland is a participating member of the national Collaborative Summer Library Program, which determines the theme of summer library programs across the country every year. More than 143,000 youth participated in Maryland summer library programs in 2024, up from 96,000 in 2023.

As a statewide summer reading partner, the Maryland State Fair donated family passes and bookmarks to all Maryland public libraries to incorporate into their summer programs this year. The State Fair also hosts the award-winning Barnyard Bedtime Tales program each weekend during the fair, when children and adults are encouraged to attend and read a bedtime story to the animals.

The Baltimore Orioles, the Maryland Science Center and the National Aquarium also are summer program partners and have donated materials, including tickets and bookmarks as incentives to youth to participate in programs throughout the state. These programs provide youth with opportunities to enjoy sports, nature and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities. Marylanders can learn more about the fun and free programs this summer by visiting their local libraries in person or online.
