BARD - Braille and Audio Recording Download

What is BARD?

BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download) is a free library service of downloadable braille and audio reading material for residents of the United States and U.S. citizens living abroad who are unable to read or use standard printed material because of visual or p​hysical disabilities. BARD provides access to thousands of special-format books, magazines, and music scores. The site is password-protected. All files are downloadable as compressed audio or formatted ebraille files. BARD is a partnership between NLS and its network of cooperating libraries. NLS maintains the website, uploads titles, and supplies libraries with circulation statistics.  Already registered with BARD?  Log in to BARD now​.​​


How does it work on my device? 

​You can use your LBPD-issued talking-book player on a long-term loan from your network library, purchase a commercial model if you prefer specific features, or download the free app to your smart device. BARD Mobile is available on the App Store (iOS) and the Play Store or Amazon Appstore (Android).​​

​What is Bookshare?

​Bookshare® is an ebook library that makes reading easier. Members can access a huge collection of ebooks and read their way with the most customizable ebooks for people with reading barriers. 

The library has 786,623 titles and is the world's most extensive collection of accessible ebooks. It includes books for school, career, and reading pleasure, as well as titles in over 34 languages. The collection is supported by a dedicated volunteer community and partnerships with over 820 US and international publishers.​ 

​BookShare is designed to be used alongside the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) and is compatible with the player.
